All You Need to Know About the Different Types of Hair Extensions

A small change can go a long way in boosting our confidence! Hair extensions are a quick and simple way to amp up your look without needing a full-on makeover. Today, we’re taking it way back to hair extensions 101 to give you a quick lesson on the different types of hair extensions available.

A small change can go a long way in boosting our confidence. When it comes to our physical appearances, however, some changes are more intensive than others. Looking for a best-of-both-worlds solution? We have it right here.

Hair extensions are a quick and simple way to amp up your look without needing a full-on makeover. Hair extensions add length, volume, depth, and drama to your existing mane. Today, we’re taking it way back to hair extensions 101 to give you a quick lesson on the different types of hair extensions available.

What Are Hair Extensions?

Let’s get basic for a hot minute and start at the beginning. What are hair extensions? These magical, temporary pieces of hair (which can be real human or synthetic hair) attach to your existing locks to create a fuller, layered look. They can be taped, clipped, hand-tied, or sewn on. No matter which method you use, the goal is for them to blend naturally amongst your own hair. High-quality, Remy human hair extensions like Wicked Roots blend so seamlessly that no one will even know they’re there!

Hair extensions are not only beneficial for those looking to shake up their look. They are also incredibly helpful for those who have slower hair growth or finer locks. Plus, some of the best types of hair extensions are DIY, allowing you to change up your look as easily as you change your outfits.

Each hair extension type flaunts its own unique style. Check out all the options below, so you can pick the right one for your hair.

Types of Hair Extensions:

When it comes to hair extensions, they are as varied and unique as the hair they help boost and lengthen! Knowing which type of extension to choose can feel overwhelming. Without the help of a professional, it can be challenging to figure out which style will work best for you.

Let's look at some of the common types of hair extensions and how each can help you be #hairgoals.

 Clip in hair extensions

Clip-In Hair Extensions:

Clip-in hair extensions are one of the most popular types of extensions – and for good reason. Clip-in hair is completely DIY. It’s easy to clip on and perfect for those days when you’re looking to take things up a notch with minimal effort. When you get home, simply unclip and remove the extension in seconds. This type of hair extension is incredibly popular. It’s also the least damaging type of hair extension. (If these sound like the perfect match for you, we highly suggest you peep our Clip It Hair Extensions.)

Band or Halo Hair Extensions:

If you're looking for a one-step, low-maintenance option that provides an instant boost of volume, halo hair extensions are the perfect way to go. Halo or band extensions feature multiple layers of hair attached to a weft band. Rather than attaching to individual strands of hair, the single band rests tightly against your scalp. (Our Band It Hair Extensions are perfect for those babes who are always on the go!)

Tape-In Hair Extensions:

Just like the name indicates, tape-in hair extensions use medical-grade, double-sided tape to stick securely at the roots of a group of hair strands. (These are much less damaging than glue in hair extensions.) They are simple to apply and remove, though it must be done by a professional hairstylist. Tape extensions are the least time-consuming type of hair extension that needs to be applied at a salon. By purchasing additional tape strips for high-quality tape-in extensions, you can drastically extend the life of the hair.

Sew-In Extensions

This next type of hair extension puts minimal tension on your natural hair strands. Sew-In Extensions is a method of application that involves sewing a weft, or a group of hair strands tied together, to your hair. This process is much more labor-intensive and can only be applied by a stylist. The final result lasts longer than other types of hair extensions and can be considered a permanent form of hair extensions. Proper routine maintenance with a stylist is required to ensure sew-in extensions always look on point. There are two main types of wefts used with the sew-in extension application method: hand-tied wefts and machine wefts.

Hand-Tied Weft Hair Extensions:

Hand-tied weft extensions are created by sewing strands of hair together by hand (hence ‘hand-tied'). This creates an ultra-thin weft attachment for a seamless application. Due to the ultra-thinness of these wefts, it is normal to use anywhere from 4-6 hand tied wefts per row, and two to three rows per head to achieve the desired outcome. Hand-tied wefts are typically applied via a beaded row base.

Machine Weft Sew-In Hair Extensions and Weaves:

Machine weft sew-in hair extensions are created by a machine sewing strands of hair together. Machine wefts are typically thicker at the attachment site than hand-tied wefts, and therefore provide more volume. Machine wefts can be applied via a beaded row or a braid created with your natural locks. The application using a braid of natural hair is commonly known as a weave.

3 Tips to Make The Most of Your New Hair Extensions

1. Think of Your Lifestyle

Before you hit that buy button, it’s important to think about your lifestyle. If you prefer a one-step, low-maintenance routine, opt for band hair extensions. For those who revel in a trip to the salon, sew in hair extensions may be the perfect addition to your look.

2. Consider the Type and Thickness of Your Natural Hair

The thicker your hair is, the better hold you’ll have for clip-in hair extensions. Tape-in extensions, on the other hand, are great for finer hair as they affix with double-sided tape directly to the hair strands. Do you research or consult with a professional stylist to decide which hair extension method is best for your unique hair type.

3. Commit to a Maintenance Routine

If you want long-lasting extensions, invest in a high-quality brand. Follow the guidelines for proper maintenance and care, so you can extend the useful life of your new favorite accessories. While synthetic hair extensions may be less expensive initially, 100% Remy Human Hair extensions last much longer (and look much better too!).
