Different Ways to Part Your Hair

Let’s talk about finding your natural part before you decide on a trendy middle part or a sleek side part. Then, we’ll explore the best hairstyles for your specific parted hair. Grab a comb and get comfortable in front of your mirror!

Have you had the same hair part since high school? Earlier?! It might be time for a new parted hair look, baddie!

Wondering, “But what should I do with my hair?” Well, what’s in style, your face shape, and your hair texture can help you figure out what look and hair part to go with.

Hairstyle trends are cyclical, and that includes the very hotly debated middle part vs. side part. If you’re a millennial, side parts were super cool growing up. Millennials always made sure their hair was parted as far to the side as possible. But now Gen Z wants millennials to know that side parts are OUT and middle parts are IN. (We’ll be the judge of that!)

To settle this, let’s talk about finding your natural part before you decide on a trendy middle part or a sleek side part. Then, we’ll explore the best hairstyles for your specific parted hair. Grab a comb and get comfortable in front of your mirror!

Find Your Natural Parted Hair

If you’ve had the same parted hairstyle for a while, you might not know where your natural part is. Don’t worry! There are a few steps you can take to easily find where your natural part falls:

Step 1: Comb your hair straight back away from your face with a wide-tooth comb.

Note: You can do this step with wet or dry hair. Curly baddies might find it easier to find their part using wet tresses, but straight hair can be damp or dry.

Step 2: With your hand, gently push the hair on the crown of your head forward toward your forehead.

Step 3: See where your hair naturally falls. Congrats – you just revealed your natural part!

Another method for finding your natural part is to determine the direction your hair grows. Sounds kind of complicated, but we promise it’s easy. Take a look at your hairline. Which direction is your hair growing from the follicles? If your hair is going toward one side of your hairline, that could indicate your natural part.

Note: If you have full-bodied curls, you might not see your hair grow in any particular direction. Hair doesn’t always have a natural part! (Guess that settles the whole middle part vs. side part argument!)

How to Middle Part Your Hair

You don’t have to choose a side—you can part your hair right down the middle! A middle part complements oval and round face shapes but requires a little bit of styling precision. We suggest using a rat-tail comb to create your part; it’ll leave you with the straightest line.

Here’s how to middle part your hair:

Step 1: With wet hair, comb your hair back. Use the pointed end of the tail comb to part your hair down the middle.

Step 2: Use the comb to measure upward from the bridge of your nose to ensure your middle part is centered.

Note: If your hair is a little stubborn (read: it's used to being in a side part or you have a serious cowlick), work your favorite styling product into the hair follicles to train them to go the other direction.

Step 3: Use a blow dryer and round brush to set the style in place. Finish with hairspray.

How to Side Part Your Hair

Okay, we said you don’t have to. But now it’s time to pick a side. (Especially if you have a square or diamond face shape—a side part shows off your unique angles!) Left or right? Depending on which direction your hair grows, one side might be easier to style than the other.

Here’s how to create a regular or deep side part:

Step 1: With wet hair, comb your hair back. Use the pointed end of the tail comb to part your hair where you want your strands to fall.

Step 2: Spritz a little bit of styling product on each side of your part and comb down to work the product into the hair follicles.

Step 3: Use a blow dryer and round brush to set the style in place. Finish with hairspray.
