If you’ve never exfoliated your scalp before, don’t worry. The DIY treatments in this blog post are beginner-friendly!  We’ll walk you through everything you need to know about exfoliating (including step-by-step recipes for making your own DIY scalp treatments).

Let’s start with the basics and talk about why exfoliating matters.

Why Should I Exfoliate My Scalp?

Good question, friend.

Exfoliating your scalp is an absolute must because:

  1. It removes dead skin cells from the top of your hair.
  2. It removes any excess oil that might be trapped underneath your hair.
  3. It removes any lingering product buildup.

If you haven’t exfoliated your scalp before, now is a great time to start. We promise – it’ll make a huge difference!

If you’re intrigued but wondering how you can exfoliate your scalp naturally, we’ve got you. You’re going to LOVE our easy DIY recipes.

Our Absolute Favorite DIY Scalp Treatment

We have to admit we’re a little bit obsessed. We’ve been experimenting with different DIY scalp exfoliation recipes, and we’re convinced we’ve found THE ONE, the best of the best.

So…drumroll please…..

It’s a coconut oil treatment!

The recipe for this DIY scalp treatment is actually *just* coconut oil. Seriously. Coconut oil is such a powerful ingredient! This treatment is pretty simple:

  • Massage coconut oil into your scalp.
  • Leave it on for 10 minutes.
  • Wash your hair as normal.
  • Bask in your hair’s silky smoothness of your hair and your ultra hydrated scalp. Yas, girl! Get it!

We love this treatment because it’s hyper moisturizing. That’s because coconut oil is known for its moisturizing properties and has been used as a home remedy throughout history. If you have a dry scalp, this treatment is perfect for you.

We also love this scalp treatment because it’s super accessible. Coconut oil can be bought at most grocery stores and is very affordable. And it’s fun! For your next girls’ night in, grab your best friend and do a DIY coconut oil treatment to exfoliate your scalps!

Brown Sugar Hair Treatment: The Best Natural Scalp Scrub

Next up: brown sugar hair scrubs! This natural scalp scrub will remove any excess oil and buildup and leave you smelling fresh and yummy! Yes, please!

Here’s the recipe for our tried and true brown sugar scalp treatment:

  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ½ tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 drops of tea tree oil

And here’s the step-by-step for this scrub:

  • Mix all of the ingredients together. If you have a food processor, use it for a smoother blend.
  • Massage the combined ingredients into your scalp.
  • Let everything rest for 10 minutes to give the scrub time to work.
  • Rinse the remaining scrub out!

That’s all there is to this at-home scalp treatment! We love this treatment because brown sugar is a naturally effective exfoliator – and this recipe is so easy to make, requiring just a few simple ingredients.

Another Homemade Scalp Scrub We’re Loving

Right now, we’re living for apple cider vinegar treatments. This all-natural DIY scalp treatment exfoliates your scalp AND helps eliminate any lingering bacteria. That’s because apple cider vinegar is antimicrobial, which means it removes any fungi causing itchiness. Sounds like a win-win to us!

The recipe for this scalp treatment is simple: one part apple cider vinegar and two parts water. As you can probably guess by now, the steps involve mixing the ingredients, massaging them into your scalp, letting them sit for 5 to 10 minutes, and then rinsing your hair as normal!

What About a Homemade Scalp Scrub for Dandruff?

If dandruff is a problem, you’ll want to use a recipe that incorporates tea tree oil, which has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that’ll help soothe that pesky itchy scalp.
