How to Properly (and Safely!) Remove Tape-In Extensions

If you’re wondering how to remove tape-in extensions, we get it. Sometimes you have to figure out how to remove hair extensions at home because grown-out tape-in extensions are not a good look. Check out our expert tips in this blog!

Tape-in extensions are usually hair extension enthusiasts' number one pick. Why? Because they’re super lightweight, easy to apply and remove (yes, really, and we’ll explain how to remove tape in hair extensions!), and blend seamlessly with your natural strands.

If you’re wondering how to remove tape-in extensions, we get it. Sometimes you have to figure out how to remove hair extensions at home because grown-out tape-in extensions are not a good look.

We’ll be honest: We always recommend going to a professional stylist––for removal and application. But if you really can’t make it to the salon and want to learn how to take out tape-in extensions on your own, we’ve got you covered. Check out our expert tips below!

How to Remove Tape in Extensions

Learning how to remove tape in hair extensions is totally doable––you’ll just need a few products to remove the adhesive from your hair. Before you get started, make sure you have a hair extension removing solvent, like our alcohol-based Wicked Roots Break Up Spray, some shampoo, conditioner, and a wide-tooth comb.

Now let’s get to the good stuff! Here’s how to take out tape-in hair extensions.

Step 1: Get comfy in front of a mirror. Sitting is best! Clip your hair up to expose the section of hair with the tape-in extensions. You'll start at the side of your head and work your way back and around.

Step 2: Spray the hair extension removing solvent directly above and on the tape attachment points. Make sure you really saturate the tape! Let the solution sit for at least 30 seconds so it has plenty of time to dissolve the glue holding the tape-in extensions onto your natural hair.

Pro tip: Our Break Up Spray leaves behind ZERO residue. We love its fresh scent and how easy it makes the removal process. Bonus? It won’t damage your natural hair!

Step 3: Now, you’re ready for the secret on how to get tape-in extensions out! Gently separate the hair extensions, pulling at the weft attached to the tape. If the adhesive is not separating easily, then the hair extension removing solvent needs more time to work or you may need to spray some more on. Remember, be gentle!

Step 4: Hair extensions still stuck to your hair? Get in there with the hair extension remover again. Really saturate the tape! Then, let it sit for a minute or two. Be patient––you want to make sure the glue is dissolving so it loosens the tape adhesive and you can easily remove the extensions.

Step 5: Go in for another gentle tug. See if the tape has released from your hair. Yes? Okay, carefully peel the tape away from your hair. Only start peeling when you feel the extensions can be easily lifted.

Pro tip: Never ever force tape-in extensions from your hair! Sometimes the remover solvent doesn’t work, even after several applications. But pulling will only damage your hair. Your best bet is to try out another hair extension removing solvent or enlist the help of a professional hair stylist.

Step 6: Repeat the entire process, working through your hair extensions you've removed them all. Focus on one piece of hair tape at a time! Getting impatient and trying to remove more than one at a time could cause some damage.

Step 7: You might notice a bit of leftover residue on your hair after you remove all your tape-in extensions. Wash your hair with shampoo like normal, then use a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute conditioner and help remove any stickiness.

Pro tip: Strands feel a little dry after removing your extensions? Use a leave-in conditioner to add extra moisture!

Step 8: Air dry your hair to protect it from heat damage–– and keep it healthy and prepped for re-application of your tape-in extensions. (Our Tape It extensions can be re-applied up to three times, for a total wear time of four to six months!)
