The First Step Toward (Finally!) Getting Healthy Hair
Here’s the deal: To get healthy hair, you have to get honest about your hair habits.
What does your hair hygiene look like? How many times do you wash your hair a week?
We strongly suggest never washing your hair more than once a day. Why? Because when you wash your hair too frequently, you strip your hair of its natural oils, which dehydrates your hair, leaving it dull and dry. We also suggest avoiding very hot or very cold water – this can f your hair color and cause other problems, like breakage.
So, go ahead and get real about your hair hygiene. If you’re washing frequently, try switching to every other day or a few times a week. And try lukewarm water instead of super hot or super cold water.
Two of Our Favorite Healthy Hair Tips
We promised tips and we’ve got two juicy ones for you!
Our first all-time favorite healthy hair care tip is to make sure you’re getting enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. There are *so* many benefits of consuming omega-3 fatty acids we could never include them all here, but one of the most important is that fatty acids improve your scalp health.
So, where can you find omega-3 fatty acids? Here are some of fatty-acid-rich foods:
- Salmon, tuna, and sardines
- Certain nuts and seeds, especially flax seeds
Another tip is to avoid using heat on your hair. We know, we know, but heat can seriously damage your locks. If you do use heat on your hair, make sure you use a heat-protectant spray! You can also try out these incredible heatless hairstyles, no damaging hot tools required.
Diet Tips That Double As Hair Tips
Here’s something you might not know: Your hair is primarily made of protein. Wild, right? So, if you want stronger, healthier hair, up your protein intake!
Here are some protein-rich foods we love including in our diets:
- Fish and seafood
- Lean meat (aka beef and pork)
- Milk and yogurt (especially Greek yogurt)
- Beans and chickpeas
You’ve undoubtedly heard all about protein before, but trust us: This tip is really, really important. If you don’t eat enough protein, your hair could start to fall out (yikes!) or become brittle.
Protein isn’t the only thing you need for healthy hair – zinc is important, too! Without enough zinc in your diet, you might experience hair loss and brittle locks.
Where can you get your fill of zinc? Good question! We love loading up on:
- Cheese and milk
If you’re having trouble getting enough zinc, you can add a supplement to your diet. But we think adding more protein and zinc to your diet is an easy at-home hair care tip, especially if it means healthier hair.
